I was attending this month’s meeting of the Bright Water Tellers which is based in Mid-Michigan, when it occurred to me that it might be fun to hold monthly meet ups for puppeteers. What we do during Bright Water Tellers meetings is tell stories. First, we tell impromptu stories in response to a theme or a prompt, and then we have an “open mic” portion during which members can tell a story that they’ve been working on. For example, I told a story during Open Mic describing how I got involved in a student-produced comedy skit show back when I was in college, only I told it via a puppet.
A puppetry meet up would be far more open ended because the focus will be on anything we can do with puppets. We might open with an exercise based around a topic or prompt, and we could have an open microphone portion where we watch someone give an 8-10 minute performance. We could practice improv with puppets, something that I’ve participated in via a zoom call with another group. Perhaps we could watch a demonstration of how to build a puppet, or just talk about our favorite puppet performers.
If this sounds like a good idea, please consider completing this survey. I’ll reach out to you when I’m farther along with this idea.
