Opportunities for Puppetry

Getting your Trinity Audio player ready...

Last month, while attending my first Friends of the Broadway Theater I introduced myself as a puppeteer, and to my surprise everybody was encouraged by everybody’s reaction. I attended that meeting because I felt like my interest in puppetry could dovetail with the local theater community, and I turned out to be quite correct (it does happen from time to time). Where this goes, I do not know, but I encourage everybody here to inquire about your own community’s theater program. Perhaps they are in need of a puppeteer! It could also be a good way to connect with other people who are interested in puppetry.

If you are in the Mid Michigan area, and are curious about the Friends of the Broadway Theater, consider attending a meeting and perhaps we will cross paths.

Another avenue for practicing my puppetry which I have been exploring is the art of Storytelling. So, this winter I have attended a couple of zoom calls put on by a mid Michigan storytelling guild which is now mostly based in Lansing, I guess. Long story short, I was inspired to explore storytelling after I discovered a puppetry act involving a purple puppet named Randy Feltface. His hilarious shows are mostly made up of very funny storytelling, and the performer behind the puppet can be very expressive.

The storytelling guild puts on events called Story Concerts, which is basically people standing up and telling a story. I believe that this could be a strong venue for puppetry.

During a recent zoom call with the storytelling guild, I took my turn in some improvised storytelling by performing with my puppet. So, this has a lot of potential I think, and I encourage everybody to give it a try.

The last thing that I’m hoping to try is a little bit of practice with improvisation and puppetry. I have had a few leads, so hopefully the next time I reach out I’ll have more to stare on this.

So, I was wondering if anybody was interested in connecting sometime this month via a zoom call? We could introduce ourselves, and maybe talk a little bit about puppetry. Just let me know in the comments.
